An...interesting...dilemma.

This is more of a personal musing than anything else, but I promise, it does relate to dominionism and the combat thereof. If it is inappropriate, I apologize in advance, but I'm curious to hear what people in this comm think.

How much can you fit in a Fit?

  • Jul. 4th, 2008 at 2:15 AM
This week I went to vancouver to see Cyndi Lauper, B52s etc for the True Colo(u)rs tour and I went to Ikea.

Note to all you people out there. Although a fit can technically fit a Ramburg double bed frame, I don't recommend playing box tetris. I think I only damaged some foam in the box, or at least I hope so. I'll find out tomorrow :D

O is for Overcoming Obstacles

It was virtual Friday today, the day before a three-day holiday weekend. Those in the paid workforce all had their brains in countdown-to-recess mode, it seems. I dunno. Anyway, of the dozen or so things I tried to do today, I only failed to accomplish one, and that one was because after four phone calls [info]pocketnaomi decided enough was enough and I ought to just give up on trying to find her a dentist that could deal with those missing fillings she has that are starting to cause her significant pain.

So, what did I accomplish? About as much as could be done with a pair of phones by one individual while spending over three hours behind the wheel (yay handsfree headsets!), over the course of an eleven hour period, that's what! Such as:

Threaded the gatekeepers of a local outpatient treatment program (four calls, two messages, one page) and got my friend who really needs medical help scheduled for an evaluation on Monday. I'm ... learning a lot about just how fubar'd access to urgent-but-not-crisis health care is around here, and I don't like what I'm learning one bit. I may attempt a journalistic writeup of such at some point; partly as catharsis and partly to share lessons learned with others who may be facing similar challenges. We'll see whether I still have the impetus to do so when I have (the luxury of) time to do so.

Won the multi-round phone tag with a psychiatrist and got the friend scheduled for a new-patient appointment also, though unfortunately the earliest this doctor could see my friend was at the end of July.

Helped [info]jenkitty move the doll house that [info]tibicina gave us for the Duchess to play with when she's older, to a safe storage area until we can get the needed renovations on it done.

Gave [info]jenkitty, who is recovering nicely from the virus that took her offline on Tuesday, 2.5 kid-free hours - in which she rearranged which beds were where in three of the four upstairs bedrooms. It was only supposed to be half that, but between the appallingly awful traffic into (not out of) downtown (a stretch of at least two miles where the average speed was less than 5mph), and the stops that got added to the route on the back end, it was over 2.5 hours before I made it back to the house. She certainly made excellent use of the time.

Took M's unfilled prescription for vital medications that he had exhausted his supply of in hand, and rerouted it to a pharmacy that had both better hours (one hour later in the evening and one hour earlier in the morning) and an available supply of the stuff, so that he'll actually have his meds tomorrow.

Wrote some significant emails to various parties about upcoming events.

Rearranged a portion of the pantry so that most of it is actually navigable again, as a side-task to finding places to cache the dozen or so bags of rice pasta that I bought earlier this week.

Still haven't managed either to find the misplaced knitting yarn for the current baby blanket project, or get a music-playing device up into my room, but at this point I'm so tired (having gotten less than five hours sleep last night) that both of those can easily wait until tomorrow.

I go fall over now.

Progress

  • Jul. 3rd, 2008 at 10:16 PM

The front door is open; the house is cooling off. It'll be heading toward cold by the time we go to bed.

The [info]flower_cat has been spending the afternoon making 8 jars of peach butter; they still have to cool off, then get boiled again. I helped with the stirring. Colleen's mom was a terrible cook, but she knew how to can fruit, and taught her daughter well. Yum.

I've spent most of the evening working on the massive directory reorganization I've described here. It's a project fraught with minor pitfalls -- it's easy to assume, as I did, that two directories called Doc in different parts of the tree are the same, when they're not even closely related. I'll probably finish over the weekend.

Tonight was the traditional "Doug and Ann Birthday Taco Spectacular" over at my mom's place. Food was very good, and I managed one taco with shell before the dentures gave up the fight. After excusing myself to the restroom to remove them (I had brought along their container just in case this became necessary) I had plate tacos, which are just as good. We avoided the unpleasant possibility of [info]kshandra and Kylie fighting over the last olive, and Regan told wonderful stories about her day. Alas, her command of English is still somewhat limited, but she got her point across.

The title is a reference to a long-standing tradition in our family. (Which we failed to do tonight, I realize.) Tacos were a special treat growing up (hence their status as a special birthday dinner) and we were amused to learn that in Mexico they're considered somewhat common, the meal of the poor. So "I wonder what the poor people in Mexico are eating tonight?" was a required comment at taco dinners.

After tacos, a wonderful spice cake (which we brought home) and we checked in on ESPN long enough to see that Tim Lincecum led the Giants to an 8-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Tomorrow, we're heading up for the game. Day baseball on the 4th of July, what could be better? How about the team we're playing?

BEAT L.A.!!!
LET'S GO GIANTS!!!
Started an Orc Barbarian in Nethack today (my favorite "hack/slash" combo) and was having a good but unremarkable run until the second level of the Gnomish Mines. There, I found bones I had picked up through Hearse. Good pile of stuff, and I have a blessed scroll of identify.. yes! I'm getting everything identified, and see these two items:

wand of wishing (0:2)
wand of wishing (1:2)

For the non-Nethackers, wands of wishing allow you to wish for just about anything in the game. (You can't get the three items you need to enter the Sanctum, and can't wish for your own Quest Object. Also, the more artifact weapons are in play, the less likely you are to get one from a wish.) The first number there is the number of times the wand has been recharged (WoW can only be recharged once) the second is number of charges left. Once the wand is exhausted, you can keep zapping it to get one last charge out of it. Got it?

So very early in the game I had a complete Ascension Kit. Frost Brand, Gray Dragon Scale Mail, Speed Boots, Gauntlets of Power, Helm of Brilliance, Cloak of Displacement, and a Shield of Reflection. Also managed a Bag of Holding.

Also in this pile is a Wand of Death (0:6). My only thought is the original player didn't know how to identify wands by writing with them.

But now I'm doomed. Because this kind of crazy luck so early in a game, especially on the new moon (game keeps track of lunar phases, during the new moon your luck takes a hit) usually means a really stupid death lurks on the next level. You get hit with a deadly poison. You step onto a sleeping gas trap and get nibbled to death by a newt. A rat steps on a polymorph trap and turns into an Arch-Lich. But you are doomed.

Except, not only has 666 the Orc evaded doom, he's prospered. Found Magicbane in another bones pile. The portal to Fort Ludios was in the first vault he checked. He got two more wishes from thrones! He's current;y 19th level, AC -43, about 200HP, and whirling invisible displaced ginsu of cold death.

Damned if this guy may not ascend.

But there is one stupid death left lurking. A previous bone level has freaking DemonLordCon, complete with Demogorgon.

ATTACK!!!

Hello, my dulcet darlings....

  • Jul. 3rd, 2008 at 10:15 PM
Just a quick posting to let everyone know I am alive, despite all the best intentions of the universe. Rather than explaining (which would take too long), let me sum up:

* Dropped Alex at my mom's
* Monday: Went out to a pub to see Joelle and many other folks I hadn't seen in a while, Got something in eye.
* Something got worse on Tuesday
* Wednesday, went to court to finalize divorce (2-year bureaucracy hell) and then went to doctor. Doctor said, "Damn, that's a big corneal abrasion!"
* Thursday morning: Went for follow-up. Abrasion healing
* Thursday afternoon: manage to give self eyestrain at work. Go home with headache.
* Thursday around 8 PM: Headache has become literal screaming nightmare; call Impink for ride to Urgent Care. Make mistake of telling Urgent Care "worst headache of my life"
* Thursday at 10 PM: Arrive at emergency room for the following: scary donut ride (CT scan), 2 misfired attempts at IV addition, 2 lumbar punctures (that's spinal taps without the music or the tiny Stonehenge), one vial of blood, $100 co-pay, and no bloody painkillers prescribed at the end when they saw my tests were all clear.
* Friday around 3 PM: Finally come back home. Headache has now decided to sublet apartment.
* Sunday: Start feeling human again. Noticed how freaking bruised I am from all the needles.
* Tuesday: Follow-up again. Now abrasion is healing, but eye is swelling from inflammation. Go to ophthalmologist who is convinced the inflammation is proof I'm riddled with filthy sexual diseases. (No hyperbole here) Go off to lab to give three more vials of vital red stuff. Get prescriptions for two sets of drops.
* Today: Follow-up to the follow-up. Still swollen, but feel all right. Blood tests come back negative; doctor angry that I'm healthy. Get yet another set of drops to go with the three I already have to do and yet another follow-up scheduled.

Got to say, my time off from the boy has not been what I was expecting. However, it has given me time to ponder and I'll share some of that with you tomorrow. Hope everyone has a lovely weekend planned. :)

New Discoveries at Mercury

Mercury's magnetic field is "alive." Volcanic vents ring the planet's giant Caloris basin while the planet itself is surrounded by a plasma nebula of unexpected complexity.

Sad news from Westercon as one of our community passed away tragically. RIP, Bert - you will be greatly missed. On a slightly happier note, I have interesting tidbits about Metropolis, the operatic version of The Fly, and George Takei's wedding...among other things.

feeling much better

After a nap and a lot of just laying down, I feel much better.

And, just for the record, brown rice + steamed veggies + peanut sauce from Thai on Broadway = yum! :-)

How desperate am I?

  • Jul. 4th, 2008 at 12:54 AM

My contract is up at the end of this month, and they’re not renewing it. They have an open position for a direct hire, but I applied for it and I haven’t heard anything back. So I thought for self-preservation purposes, I’d better start looking to see what else is out there.

First step is to see if my pimp has anything. Ok, enter http://www.[pimpname].com/ into a browser, and get “Safari can’t find the server”, but first there is a weird little flash as if it is getting redirected. So I try curl on that address, and get:

<head><title>Document Moved</title></head>
<body><h1>Object Moved</h1>This document may be found <a HREF="http://spusitinf0
02/Pages/index.aspx">here</a></body>

And I repeat the experiment with a telnet to port 80, and find they made the exact same damn stupid mistake in the Location: header in the 302 message.

Do I really want to entrust my career to people who make mistakes like this? I don’t think so.

The benefit of being a lawyer...

Is that if someone REALLY drives me up the wall I KNOW that they're hurting themselves more than they hurt me :)

Mr. C, I sympathise, your divorce proceedings were a shambles and you, well, you just got fleeced. BAADLY. In fact we are going to try to have the whole damn financial package re-evaluated so you don’t end up checking into a cardboard hotel for the rest of your days.

Bold the things you've done.

behind here )

Today found out that one of my co-workers is retiring in September, and another is moving to Alabama because his wife was promoted. ARGH. More training. I haven't finished training the last batch. And I am a TERRIBLE trainer - I have no patience. I just know the job better than most, so they come to me... I must breathe...

Suddenly I'm starving.

I have wonderful people around me.

[info]kshandra gave me my birthday present a day early, thinking that I'd probably want it for the Giants game tomorrow.

She's right. Expect a lot of pictures from me in the coming days.

While playing with my new toy, the USPS delivered a package from [info]redc1c4. It wasn't ticking, so I opened it. The new hat rocks, dude, and I'm looking forward to listening to So Many Roads after dinner tonight.

Minolta Maxxum 7D, DOA

  • Jul. 3rd, 2008 at 9:13 PM

I bought a Maxxum 7D as I mentioned I might earlier. I decided that while it’s not the latest thing, it’s half the price of a new camera, and I can use my existing lenses. It arrived today. Only one small minor inconsequential detail. None of the buttons beside the LCD screen work. So I have no way to change any settings, review pictures, look at histograms, or basically do anything other than take pictures at 800 ISO. I’m hoping against hope that there is a setting on one of the bazillion switches and dials on the camera that is locking out those buttons, because otherwise I’m going to have to hope like hell that the seller’s “we guarantee against mechanical defects” guarantee actually means something.

Mercury's Surface Dominated by Volcanism and Iron Deficiency, NASA/JHUAP/ASU

"Volcanism has played a more extensive role in shaping the surface of Mercury than scientists had thought. This result comes from multispectral imaging data gathered in January 2008 by MESSENGER, the latest spacecraft to visit the Sun's innermost planet.

MESSENGER data has also identified and mapped surface rock units that correspond to lava flows, volcanos, and other geological features. At the same time, the spacecraft's suite of instruments has confirmed an apparent planet-wide iron deficiency in Mercury's surface rocks."
